Psychedelics are illegal in most nations around the world. However, we might be losing out on some amazing benefits that they may offer.
For thousands of years, cultures worldwide have been using hallucinogens. There are even cave paintings in the Sahara that date back to 7000 BC, depicting the use of magic mushrooms.
Just a little over a decade ago, in 2005, the government of the United Kingdom named magic mushrooms as a Class A drug. That means that possessing them means seven years of jail time, and selling the drugs could mean a life sentence.
Most other countries, including the United States and [...]
Ask any biologist and he’ll tell you lichens are an intriguing bunch. They exist only because of a symbiotic relationship between algae (or cyanobacteria) and fungi. The fungus creates a network that sustains, hydrates and protects the alga, which in turn provides sugars through photosynthesis. So, while they exhibit plant-like characteristics, they are not plants. They are composite organisms. This makes the case of the psychedelic lichen even more [...]
New research out of London suggests psychedelics, specifically psilocybin the active component of magic mushrooms, can have similar effects on the brain to meditation. More importantly, the two states of mind each generates may one day be used to help those suffering from depression or anxiety.
When Ram Dass, American spiritualist, writer and associate of Timothy Leary, gave his Indian guru and master meditator, Maharaji, a massive dose of LSD, Dass expected the worse you could imagine from giving an old man a hallucinogenic drug. To much his surprise, Maharaji felt absolutely nothing except for a giggle or two. Skeptical that the man had even swallowed the capsules, Dass made [...]
LA PINE, Ore. (AP) – A sheriff’s officer says four central Oregon residents were rushed to a hospital after they used a phone app to identify wild mushrooms but ended up consuming mushrooms that were poisonous.
A local television station reports that Deschutes County sheriff’s Sgt. Doug Sullivan says deputies and medics responded Thursday afternoon to a report of poisoning on private property south of Sunriver.
He says two boys, ages 4 and 14, and a 34-year-old woman were showing symptoms of mushroom poisoning. A 15-year-old boy who also ate the mushrooms wasn’t showing symptoms but was taken to the hospital as a [...]
Psychedelic drugs, such as psilocybin have been of interest to psychologists due to their ability to induce altered states of intense well-being and profound personal significance. A recent study asked people, some who were psilocybin users and others who were not, about the best, most wonderful experiences of their lives. Some users said that the most wonderful experience occurred under the influence of psilocybin. Other users, who had their most wonderful experience while not under the drug’s influence, nevertheless reported a profound alteration of consciousness that was similar in some ways to the effects of psilocybin. For example, they described unusual visual hallucinations in [...]

Speaking at Breaking Convention, a three-day conference held in London that aimed to explore the benefits of psychedelic drugs as medicines, amongst other topics, Professor David Nutt talked to me about his concerns on how the law is interfering with medical research and why LSD is still a problem child.
Professor David Nutt is to drug science what David Attenborough is to the natural world. A renowned neuropsychopharmacologist based at Imperial College, London, Professor Nutt is famed for sparking debates around illegal drugs and government policies. He is one of a [...]
The psychedelic drug in magic mushrooms may have lasting medical and spiritual benefits, according to new research from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
The mushroom-derived hallucinogen, called psilocybin, is known to trigger transformative spiritual states, but at high doses it can also result in “bad trips” marked by terror and panic. The trick is to get the dose just right, which the Johns Hopkins researchers report having accomplished.
In their study, the Hopkins scientists were able to reliably induce transcendental experiences in volunteers, which offered long-lasting psychological growth and helped people find peace in their lives — without the negative [...]
At the fifth annual Horizons: Perspectives on Psychedelics conference in New York City in October 2011, pioneering psychedelic researcher Dr. James Fadiman solidified his reemergence as a leading researcher of and advocate for psychedelic substances. Fadiman had done groundbreaking research with LSD up until the very day it was federally banned in 1966, but after that, he retreated into a life of quiet conventionality—at least on the surface.
While Fadiman disappeared himself from the public eye for decades, he never did give up him interest in and enthusiasm for psychedelics. A year before appearing at Horizons, he published his life’s work, The Psychedelic Explorer’s [...]
This battle rapper decided to take magic truffles before his performance, because Amsterdam.
Californian Dirtbag Dan is pretty much the definition of ‘a bit of a character’.
The battle rapping funny man was in Amsterdam recently for the first event in Holland by the UK’s leading battle rap league, Don’t Flop.
Being a bit of a psychonaut, and being in Amsterdam, the inevitable happened, and Dan decided to take magic truffles. Not just recreationally, but ahead of his battle with UK funnyman Big J.
Don’t Flop cameraman Liam Bagnall was there the whole time, so decided to make this mini-documentary about it.
A recent study done using the tooth plaque of an 18,700 year old woman’s remains found a variety of mushroom spores embedded in the prehistoric woman’s teeth. This discovery is definitive proof that mushrooms were a part of the human diet by this point in time, predating our previous understanding of fungus being used as a food source by humans by over 3,000 years. This means that stone age humans may have readily identified edible mushrooms, or even sought out mushrooms that held ‘special’ powers. For anyone familiar with Terence McKenna’s ‘Stoned Ape Theory’, this evidence should be of no surprise. This theory is a hypothesis that [...]
Ana Kasparian, from the Young Turks speaks to Two scientists who claim Psychedelics, such as MDMA and Magic Mushrooms (Psilocybin) are as safe as riding a bike or playing soccer.
They suggest the drugs can help treat some of the most common and most dangerous addictions to substances like Heroin, Tobacco and Alcohol.
The war on drugs has done more harm than good and its about time we, the people stand up for our rights.
Psilocybin mushrooms and the unique state of mind they bestow have played an important, deep seeded role in human history. The extensive study of humanity’s ancient theological culture and ancestry has confirmed that many of the forerunners of our planet had established a sacramental relationship with the power of this mystical fungus. While psilocybin mushrooms grows worldwide, there have long been rumors and folklore about a highly coveted, rare, and ultra-potent species of psychoactive mushroom. Some believe it is only a tale, but others take their mushroom lore quite seriously. We would like to explore the possible species of mushroom that may be the mythical [...]
