SPIRIT JAR GROW GUIDE

This is the accommodating grow guide for our Spirit Jar Grow Kits. Congratulations on picking up your kit, its now time to get started on growing your first batch of edible mushrooms.

Please ensure you follow the guide below accurately to ensure best results. Growing mushrooms is a delicate process that can go wrong a thousand ways, the most important thing to remember is sterility. Always make sure you and your environment, as well as your tools, are as clean and sterile as possible to eliminate the chance of contamination and ultimately, failure!

Spirit Molecule Grow Kit Guide
OVERVIEW

Your grow process will consist of 5 stages and will take approximately 9 to 11 weeks for your mushrooms to fruit. This is, of course, dependant on the type of mushrooms you are growing and can vary based on strain. We will outline each stage below to give you an overview of what is involved and then further expand on each stage once you are ready to get started. Please ensure you read the full Overview below before you begin your grow.

WHERE TO CARRY OUT YOUR GROW OPERATION

Before you begin your operation, choose a place in your home where you will set up your equipment and carry out the work necessary. We recommend a room that is free from draft and has minimum porous materials placed around, such as rugs and carpets. An ideal room would be your bathroom, begin by hoovering the room and thoroughly cleaning with a 10% bleach solution, making sure you give everything a good wipe, including the surface on which you will be carrying out your work.

Kitchens and Bedrooms are not ideal locations but if you have a still air box in which to work in then you can get away with carrying out your grow in these rooms. Once you have cleaned the room, close the door and let the air settle for 10 to 15 minutes before starting your grow. Once you enter the room to begin your operation, keep the door close and keep sudden movements that could create air currents to a minimum.

CLEANLINESS AND STERILITY

We cannot stress how important it is to be as clean as possible when working with Mushrooms. Your spores can become contaminated extremely easy and you could end up losing your whole grow and risk contaminating your house with unwanted bacteria that could also hinder future grow attempts.

Before you begin, take a shower, wear new fresh clothes and always wear your mouth mask and gloves (both provided in your kit).

You are now ready to begin your grow and inoculate your cake, move on to Stage 1 below.

STAGE 1: INOCULATION

During this stage, you will inoculate your jars with your choice of mushroom spores in syringe form. Before you begin, make sure you and your clothes are clean, you have washed your arms and hands, your face mask is securely on your face, fully covering your nose and mouth, and finally, make sure you are wearing your gloves.

Give your spore syringe a shake until you break up any spore clumps that may have formed. Unscrew the syringe cap, take your sealed needle head out of the packaging and screw it on to your syringe. Once your syringe is ready, take the provided alcohol wipe and clean the surface of your Spirit Jar, you can inject your spores directly through any part of the lid. Wait for a few seconds for the surface to dry and inject your needle into the silicone lid of your jar, aiming at a 45-degree angle towards the sides of the jar. Slowly inject 1ml of the spores into 4 different parts of the jar lid.

It is not vital to inject your spores towards the sides of the jar, however, this method ensures you begin to see colonisation as soon as it happens, whereas injecting into the centre of the cake may take longer to show visible signs of colonisation. Once you have injected 1ml of spores into 4 different sections of the lid near the glass boundary you are ready to move on to Stage 2: Colonisation.

Tip: If you are using the same spore syringe across multiple grow kits, we suggest you use a fresh sterile needle, or you could risk cross-contamination. If you don’t have any spare needles you can pick them up in our store, or alternatively, heat up the needle using a lighter until it is glowing hot, then wait a few seconds for it to cool down and begin inoculating your other kits as normal. Wiping the needle with alcohol wipes will not sterilise it, to achieve full sterilisation you need to heat the needle.

STAGE 2: Colonisation

When you are ready to store your jars away to colonise, slightly unscrew the lid of the jar in order to allow optimal air circulation.

Place your jars somewhere that is dark and at room temperature to kick start the colonisation process. A cupboard on a high shelf would be a good place to store your box, away from too much dust and movement. Your jars will begin to turn white after a few days. You will notice web-like features appear close to where you injected your spores. Patience is important during this stage, you should begin to see signs of colonisation after 3 to 6 days and full colonisation can take up to 9 weeks but is generally around 6. Once your jars are completely white, give them an extra week and move on to the next step.

Always keep your jars away from direct sunlight. For best results, the room you store your jars should be between 18C and 26C, the closer to the higher end of the spectrum you keep your box, the quicker the mycelium will colonise.

Tip: A good indication that your jars are ready for the next stage is when you begin to notice small pin-heads forming (see image below).

Once your jars have fully colonised and you have waited an extra week for optimal results, you are ready to move on to Step 3: Fruiting.

STAGE 3: FRUITING

You are now ready to fruit your cakes and watch your mushrooms grow. You have two options here, both are equally good in their own respective way. Which option you choose is up to you, we prefer the second method but its totally based on preference. Go with whichever resonates with you.

GROW METHODS

The two methods of choice are the Dunk & Roll Method and the Grow In-Jar Method. With the Grow In-Jar Method, you remove the lid from your jars and grow your mushrooms straight out of the jars. With the Dunk & Roll Method, you remove the cakes from the jars, hydrate them in water for 24 hours and allow the mushrooms to freely grow out of the cakes without the restrictions of the glass jar.

1. DUNK & ROLL METHOD

Using this method you are providing the fruiting cakes with extra moisture to allow for larger yields. If you find this step too much you can simply skip it and move on to the Grow In-Jar Method.

For this method you will need the below supplies:

  • 1 x Bag of Fine Vermiculite (supplied in your grow kit)
  • Something to submerge your cakes in, a large saucepan would work great (not supplied)

This process will take approximately 24 hours. You will begin with submerging your cakes in water and placing a plate on top of them to push them down under the water. You will cover this and refrigerate for 24 hours. After which point you will roll your cakes in Heated Vermiculite.

1. Clean an area in your kitchen near the sink. Take your Spirit Jar lid off, turn the cake over and gently tap the bottom of the jar into your other hand until it falls out of the jar, be careful not to bruise your cake. Carefully rinse it under the tap to remove the excess vermiculite layer, slowly brushing them off with your fingers.

If you are having difficulties removing your cake from the jar, get a thick book that is not a hardcover, something like the Yellow Pages would work great. Slightly tilt your jar and tap the edge on the book until your cake begins to come out of the jar, once you can get a grip on the cake, slowly twist and pull it out of the jar. You should wait for your cake to fully pull away from the jar before you attempt to remove it or may find it hard to get them out of the jar. See the image below for what a cake that is pulling away from the jar looks like. This happens when the moisture is removed and the cake shrinks, allowing it to come out of the jar more easily.

2. Find a container big enough to hold your cakes underwater, fill it 3/4 of the way with water and place your cakes inside, then find something to place on top of your cakes to submerge as much of them under the water as possible, a small dinner plate will work perfectly here. Then cover the container and plate it inside the fridge for 24 hours.

3. After 24 hours, take your supplied bag of Vermiculite, empty it on a piece of foil and place it in the oven for 20 minutes at 180C. While your Vermiculite is sterilizing, prepare your Humidity Grow Tent. Scroll down below for instructions on how to put your grow tent together.

4. After 20 minutes, remove the Vermiculite from the oven and let it cool for 5 minutes. Once cooled down, take your cakes out of the fridge and wait for any excess water to drain. Then simply roll your cakes through the Vermiculite to fully cover each side of the cakes.

5. You are now ready to place your cakes in your Humidity Grow Tent, which hopefully you have prepared. If not, leave your cakes on top of the Vermiculite and cover them with something, now read the instructions below on how to put your Humidity Grow Tent together and come back to this step.

Place your cakes on top of the foils inside your Humidity Grow Tent. Use a spray bottle to lightly mist the inside of the tent and then close off the top by slightly bending the top down and using the provided Paper Clips to close them off to avoid dust getting inside. You should avoid spraying your cakes directly with water for the first 12 hours.

Now place your tent somewhere high where it can get natural light. You don’t want to leave it in direct sunlight, a corner of the room that gets light from a side window is perfect. You need to keep humidity at around 90 – 95% for optimal results and the room temperature should be between 22 – 24C.

HUMIDITY & MOISTURE CONTROL

You want to make sure your tent is constantly aired and misted with water. After the first 12 hours, you want to mist your cakes directly until they shine with moisture. Anytime you no longer see the shine on your cakes, it is time to mist them again. You should aim to mist your cakes and tent at least 5 times a day, aim for 4 – 6 times per day for optimal results.

When the water evaporates it triggers a signal for the mushrooms to begin growing, you need to ensure you remove this evaporated water out of the air inside the tent. You do this by fanning the air each time you open your tent to spray it with water. The filter on the tent will allow for clean air exchange but it is vital that you manually fan the tent every day or your yields will be small.

If you do everything right you should see little minions begin to show signs of life within a week or so.

Tip: The water stored in the Perlite will evaporate too, you should aim to rehydrate the perlite once a week by removing it out of the tent and into the strainer again. You need to be careful with your cakes when removing them, keep them safe and somewhere clean. If you don’t want to remove your cakes from the tent, gently and slowly pour water into the tent directly on to the perlite every other day.

This stage is complete when you have enough mushrooms to pick for your first harvest, simply move on to Stage 4: Harvest.

2. GROW IN-JAR METHOD

If you are growing in the jar, follow the below instructions.

1. Simply remove the lid of the jar and gently wipe off the first layer of Vermiculite by running it under the tap, then fill the jar with as much water as you can and put the lid back on. Place the jar in the fridge for 24 hours.

2. After 24 hours, remove your jar from the fridge and drain out all the water content.

3. Place your jar directly into your Humidity Grow Tent (steps on how to put this together below).

4. Spray the inside of the tent with water and close up the top of the bag, securing them with the provided Paper Clips to avoid any dust getting into your tent.

5. Now place your tent somewhere high where it can get natural light. You don’t want to leave it in direct sunlight, a corner of the room that gets light from a side window is perfect. You need to keep humidity at around 90 – 95% for optimal results and the room temperature should be between 22 – 24C.

PREPARING THE HUMIDITY TENT

The Humidity Grow Tent will house your cakes and keep them moist, providing the ideal environments in which mushrooms like to grow.

For this stage you will need the following supplies:

  • 1 x Bag of Perlite (supplied in your grow kit)
  • 1 x Humidity Tent (supplied in your grow kit)
  • 1 x Face mask (supplied in your grow kit)
  • 1x Piece of Foil slightly bigger than your cake, only needed if you did the Dunk & Roll method

1. Put on your face mask for this part so that you don’t inhale the Perlite dust, which can be harmful to your lungs. Empty your provided bag of Perlite into a strainer or sieve, with holes smaller than the perlite pieces. Rinse the perlite under cold water until all the dust is washed out and the perlite is fully soaked. Shake the sieve to get rid of any excess water, being careful not to lose much of the perlite down the sink.

2. Open up your Humidity Grow Tent provided in your grow kit and empty the Perlite into the bag, distributing the Perlite evenly on the bottom of the bag.

3. If you are following the Dunk & Roll method, cut a piece of foil slightly larger than each one of your cakes and place them inside the Grow Tent on top of the perlite. If you are following the Grow In-Jar Method you don’t need the foil, since you will be placing your jar directly into the tent.

Your Humidity Grow Tent is now ready.

STAGE 4: HARVEST

When your mushrooms start to grow, you want to watch the veils under the cap of the mushrooms, just before the veil breaks is the best time to harvest your mushrooms. If you look under the cap you can see the veils starting to open up, if this is the case, use a Scalpal to cut the mushroom from the base. If you don’t have Scalpels gently twist the mushroom from the base and pull. This method is not ideal as it can cause the cake to break off with the mushroom, putting a dent in your next flush. Its definitely worth investing in a Scalpal.

Once you have harvested all of your mushrooms from the first flush you can move on to the Stage 5: Re-Flush.

Tip: You may find that some of your mushrooms wont fully grow and remain as small specs. These are called mutes and are extremely potent, make sure you pick those tiny fella’s!

STAGE 5: RE-FLUSH

Whichever method you used initially to grow your mushrooms, during this stage you will follow the same steps. If your method of choice was the Grow In-Jar Method, you will need to remove your cake from the jar and follow the steps below, which are the same as the steps followed in the Dunk & Roll Method, minus the Vermiculite Rolling.

1. Remove your cake and carefully rinse it under the tap to give it a good clean.

3. After 24 hours place your cakes back into the Humidity tent, making sure you have fully soaked the Perlite under water just as you did before in your sieve. Follow the same process as your first flush.

Tip: The second flush usually gives larger yields and bigger mushrooms. You can get up to 4 flushes, some have even reported more.

Enjoy, have fun and be safe.
